The United Kingdom outperforms other European countries in terms of the best universities, according to the latest rankings compiled by Times Higher Education (THE)

Already famous for two of the best universities in the world, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, the United Kingdom also hosts 40% of the top 20 European universities.
This graph shows the countries in which the 20 most important universities in Europe are located.
It shows that the UK outperforms its closest rival, Germany, with double the best universities. Eight universities in the United Kingdom represent 40% of the top 20 European universities.
The University of Oxford leads the European classification (as well as the world ranking). It is the oldest university in the English-speaking world.
Germany has 20% of the best universities in Europe. Its leading institution is LMU Munich, which ranks 9th in the European top 20. LMU Munich has 26 Nobel prizes among its staff and alumni.
The Netherlands is in third place, with 15% of the best European universities. Its best-ranked institution is the Delft University of Technology.
Switzerland has 10% of the best European universities, including ETH Zurich, which ranks fourth in Europe's Top 20 global.
Sweden, Belgium and France can claim 5% of the leading universities in Europe, with the Karonlinska Institute of Sweden (8th), KU Leuven of Belgium (12th) and the École Normale Supérieure (20th) of France among the best performers.
